Whitty Writers is an Oklahoma-based creative writing club for locals to meet up for writing exercises, lessons, sessions, and retreats. As a member of the club myself, I was happy to help out by volunteering to design a logo for the group as it became more established. "Whitty" is a play on the name of the district where the meetups originated, and a red panda has become the mascot for the club.
Two logos stacked. The top logo reads "datebox" in a white sans serif typeface in all caps on a pink background. Next to the logo is the word "before". The bottom logo reads "happily" in navy with a white heart dotting the letter i on a yellow background. Next to the logo is the word "after".
The logo design we landed on conveys the friendly, warm, and fun energy of Whitty Writers. I modified a vintage-feeling rounded serif typeface to represent the deep history behind creative writing principals tying together with the modern writer. We wanted to take a unique approach to this logo, so I used the red panda mascot's tail as a fountain pen as a twist on the typical fountain pen imagery often used when designing for the concept of writing.
The construction and guides for the Happily logo. Under the logo is the heart icon, and the letters "ily".
Here are the black and white versions of the logo. For all white, I utilized negative space to communicate the form of the red panda.
5 blobs of color representing the brand colors. The yellow blob reads "primary". The navy blob reads "primary accent". the red-orange blob reads "secondary accent". Light blue and mint blobs both read "secondary"
The colors used for Whitty Writers resemble a red panda, but also evoke the emotional warmth of the club without the icon present. The sans serif font that I paired with the logo is a nod to certain elements within the logo and header font, and it's roundness brings forth the same friendliness.
